The game is getting faster and faster all the time so the emphasis on skating and speed development at all levels has become paramount to the professional player.
Speed is said to be power that is controlled by skill. We “JP Skating Coaches” believe that players need to put a lot of effort to the right kind of off-ice and on-ice skating specific training at the early phase of players development. Players should learn the fundamentals of edge work and skating technique that is needed to be able to play at the highest level. Even though the sport is moving more towards early specification we still need to remember to increase hockey specific training gradually and not to forget other sports and learning basic movement skills in the early years of players development.
With the increasing speed of the game, players are left with far less time and space and must be able to work within close quarters in order to succeed at the highest levels of hockey. Good skating technique, skating speed and physical fitness helps players to create much needed time and space for themselves in the rink.

luisteluvalmennus.fiArttu has studied at University of Jyväskylä and he graduated in 2009 from the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences. He did his master thesis about youth ice hockey coaching and he has coached young players since 2002 until present.
He played ice hockey in Finland at highest junior level until he started his studies at the university. At the same time he started to compete in ice cross downhill also known as Red Bull Crashed Ice and toured the world for 7 years winning multiple international competitions as well as won the world championship title in 2011. He is considered one of the legends of the sport. He has over 10 years of experience in ice hockey junior coaching and he has also developed custom skate blades for ice cross downhill with the Finnish skate blade company RamonEdge.
